The Weaver girls basketball team has a pattern going.

When Haley Homesley has scored 20 points or more in a game this year, the Lady Bearcats have won. When she doesn’t, they haven’t.

Homesley scored 21 points and grabbed 14 rebounds as Weaver snapped a four-game losing streak with a 48-27 victory over Wellborn.

Homesley scored 22 in the Lady Bearcats’ season-opening victory at Munford. She had 9, 16, 14 and 12 in their last four games.

“We’ve been struggling to play together as a team, so I felt like we came together better as a team this time,” Homesley said. “We’re starting to learn each other a little bit better. When we do that and everything works right it usually goes pretty good.”

It was anybody’s game early. The game was tied six times in the first nine minutes as the teams traded baskets, then Weaver went on a 10-0 run – with Homesley scoring six in the middle – to take control. The Lady Panthers got back within six, then Weaver scored the last eight points of the second quarter – six more by Homesley – to lead by 14 at the break.

“It’s been a rough week and a half; we’ve taken a lot of lumps,” Weaver coach Gary Atchley said. “We needed to come in here and try to play well to get ready for this big area run we’ve got.

“I thought when we started pressing the game changed a little bit. We’ve been working on that a lot in practice. I don’t know if you can it a press yet. Maybe call it just a P-R. We’ll add letters to it as we get better at it.”

Brook Singleton was Wellborn’s leading scorer with points. Cloie Adkison had six points and 12 rebounds.
