Cubs tops in Lincoln

New, three other finalists lead Alexandria to team title in Lincoln’s Golden Bear Classic, Heflin’s Williamson MVW

LINCOLN – Jaden New won the 145-pound title over a county rival, Kaden Deline, Preston Jones and Connor Hall all reached championship bouts and Alexandria had 11 wrestlers place in the top four as the Valley Cubs won the Golden Bear Classic Saturday.
The Valley Cubs scored 247 points, well ahead of runner-up Ranburne (177) and third-place Southside (143).
“Man, they did great,” Alexandria coach Frank Hartzog said. “There’s a long way to go, but there’s great potential.”
Cleburne County’s undefeated Zachary Williamson was voted the most outstanding wrestler. He scored three pins and a 17-0 technical fall in the championship match.
New and Weaver’s Cody Souder wrestled for the second time this week and Saturday New scored a 10-8 overtime victory in what was voted the tournament’s best match.
New was the Valley Cubs’ only weight division champion. Ranburne, Southside and Moody all won three weight divisions.
Alexandria’s Hall lost a tough 4-3 match to Christian Smith of Ranburne in the 195-pound final. Deline was pinned in the 113 final and Jones was pinned in the 106 final.
