Playoff scoreboard

Five Calhoun County teams advance to state semifinals, guaranteeing two will be playing for a state title; includes Friday scores and semifinal pairings

For the first time in the history of the AHSAA playoffs, five football teams from Calhoun County will be playing in the state semifinals guaranteeing at least two teams will be playing for state titles in two weeks.

Anniston, Jacksonville, Oxford, Piedmont and Wellborn all secured spots in their respective semifinals with victories Friday night. Two of the semifinal games – Wellborn at Piedmont in 3A and Anniston at Jacksonville in 4A – will be county-on-county affairs, also a first.

Oxford hosts Pinson Valley in the 6A semifinals.

“I just think it shows how good football is in Calhoun County and this area,” Jacksonville coach Clint Smith said. “I think it just really shows the talent level and the coaching that’s in this area.

“They know us. We know them. Our kids know each other. We had a heck of a game earlier in the season. It’s going to be an all-out war Friday night. It’s a shame one of us isn’t going to make it, but one of us will.”

Wellborn (40-35), Jacksonville (38-30) and Oxford (34-33) all won when the semifinal opponents played during their region seasons.

Jacksonville, which has never reached the semifinals, has never played a county rival in the playoffs. Anniston, in the semis for the first time since 2011, hasn’t either.

Piedmont, in the semifinals for the fifth straight year, played Ohatchee in the last county-on-county playoff matchup in 2016 (a week after playing Weaver). Wellborn’s last county playoff opponent was Oxford, in 1989 and 1988; the Panthers haven’t been to semis since 1995.
