Donoho wins at White Plains; surging Alexandria “getting better” in reaching Muscle Shoals semis

The Alexandria volleyball team had a 13-match winning streak snapped in the semifinals of the Muscle Shoals tournament, but still went 4-1 and improved to 14-4. 

The Lady Cubs beat Wilson, Muscle Shoals, Arab and Shades Valley, then lost to Muscle Shoals in bracket play in 3 sets.

Jordan Beason and Anna Johnson both had big days. Beason has 38 kills, 25 digs; Johnson had 87 assists, 26 digs and 7 aces.

Lexie Weber had 27 kills. Sarah Pelham has 42 digs and 9 aces. Kandyn Blankenship has 13 kills and 26 digs. Ashley Parker has 11 digs and 4 aces. Kaylee Smith has 16 kills and Madison Wallace had 12.

“We’re getting better,” Lady Cubs coach Whitney Welch said.

Donoho won the White Plains tournament, dropping just two sets in winning five matches.

It started with an early-morning win over area rival Faith Christian (25-22, 25-22) and continued through Weaver (25-11, 25-15);  Lincoln (25-16, 19-25, 15-11); Ranburne (25-12, 25-17) and Ohatchee in the finals (25-18, 20-25, 15-5).

Lily Grace Draper scores 36 kills in the tournament and Maggie Wakefield had 32 kills and eight blocks.

It was the first tournament win the Donoho seniors have ever had as volleyball players.
