The Weaver volleyball team is starting to develop a closer’s mentality in its year of transition and first-year coach Chelsea Watson Mize couldn’t be happier.

The Lady Bearcats won two matches Thursday night, beating Ranburne and county rival Wellborn, to improve to 7-1.

“The girls really fought hard in a close match with Wellborn,” said Mize, who was promoted from junior high coach to varsity a week before school started. “We have been working really hard to change our mindset from giving up too easily to being fighters. The game isn’t over until it’s over. I really feel like my team is working hard to have more positive attitudes, which is helping us to win more games.”

McKenna Flynn led the offense in the Ranburne match with 10 kills and an ace. Rylee Hewitt had nine assists, Marlee Wells had eight assists and both had four aces. Haley  Homesley and Kayleigh Hindsman had seven kills each in the Wellborn victory.

“The 7-1 start is honestly better than I expected,” Mize said. “This is my first year as a varsity volleyball coach so I assumed it would be a building year due to me being new and the girls adjusting to me.

“We have really focused on discipline and attitude and these girls have exceeded my expectations. They have the drive to win and I think they will do big things if they keep up the hard work.”
