Soggy start

Anniston’s Archer fires 2-under 70 to share third place after opening round of State Amateur

By East Alabama Sports Today

KILLEN – Logan Archer was soaked from an all-day rain, but all things considered he was in a pretty good mood.

Archer shot a 2-under-par 70 with a bogey on his last hole Thursday and landed in a four-way tie for third place after the opening round of the 103rd State Amateur at Turtle Point Yacht and Country Club.

He’s tied with Ford Goldasich of Homewood, Austin Coggin of Birmingham and Dawson Atkinson of Trussville, two shots behind co-leaders Trent Alexander of Athens and Will McFadden of Mobile.

“I could have been up there easily,” Archer said. “I’m not mad. It’s one of those days. It’s a tough round of golf, one of those days you’ve gotta grind it out.”

Archer is one of three Anniston players in the field. Former White Plains golfer Layton Bussey shot 81 and current White Plains player Andrew Miller shot 84.

The rain was a factor all day. Archer warmed up on the range in his rain suit, then bogeyed his first hole of the day, the par-3 10th. He rebounded with an eagle on the next hole, then birdied 13 and 17 to turn in 3-under. A violent lip-out on 18 kept him from grabbing a share of the lead.

He gave a shot back with a bogey on 4, but it got it back on the next hole, then bogeyed the last when he got out of position off the tee.

“I’m pleased with the way I hit it; I could have made a few more putts,” he said. “It was hard to make anything in that weather. It was rough.”

Only 11 players were able to break par in the round, which had an average score of 77.6.

“The rain helps to make sure you stick to your game plan and focus on each individual shot,” McFadden said.

Archer recently finished up his collegiate career at North Georgia and hadn’t played in a month before playing in the Wilfred Galbraith Invitational at Anniston Country Club this past weekend. He shot 69 in the final round.

He shot 70 in the first round of last year’s State Am and finished ninth. He tees off at 8:20 a.m. Friday
