No holiday hangover

Girls holiday roundup: Weaver comes back strong from the break, looks sharp early against Oxford and wins Cleburne County tourney opener, and more

By East Alabama Sports Today

HEFLIN – The time of year and time of day didn’t make a good formula for a crisp game, but Weaver came out surprisingly sharp and after opening a big lead held off an Oxford rally in the fourth quarter to win the opening game in the 2018 Cleburne County Holiday Hoops Classic, 49-41.

The game was played at 9 a.m., two days after Christmas, but the Lady Bearcats (9-4) had a plan to ward off any post-holiday blues.

“We practiced at 9 o’clock Wednesday to get acclimated to it,” Weaver coach Gary Atchley said. “It’s rough playing at 9 a.m. I thought we played well.”

The Lady Bearcats, who likely picked up a few points in their hopes for a high seed in the upcoming Calhoun County Tournament meeting, jumped out to a 25-12 halftime lead and extended it to 36-19 after three quarters.

Abby Gaines and Haley Homesley led Weaver with 12 points each. Gaines hit back-to-back 3s among the eight straight points she scored at one stretch in the second quarter. Maleah Foster controlled the paint.

The post-holiday rush caught up to them in the fourth quarter, though. Oxford staged a modest rally, scoring as many points in the quarter as they had the whole game, but never got closer than 10 points.

“We got tired, the holiday break got us,” Atchley said. “We played well in the first half, played like we had fresh legs.”

Akiera Robinson sparked the Oxford comeback with eight points, including a pair of 3-pointers. She finished with a game-high 14 points. Justyce Smith (10) and Ashleigh Jackson (11) each had five in the quarter.
