OXFORD – The Oxford Yellow Jackets tuned up for their expected shootout with Plainview by nailing 11 3-pointers Monday night on their way to demolishing Fort Payne 102-46.

Six players scored in double figures as the Jackets (6-3) won their third straight. Mont McClendon hit five 3-pointers and finished with 17 points. Kobe Warren hit four 3s and had 17. Zondrick Garrett led all scorers with 21.

“That is who we are,” a happy Oxford coach Joel Van Meter said. “Rome was not built in a day, but we are getting better.”

The Jackets led 81-38 with four minutes left in the third quarter as they were red-hot from the floor and creating turnovers with their defense. It allowed VanMeter to give his reserves a lot of playing time and build some depth.

“Our defense feeds our offense,” VanMeter said. “We are a better team defensively and when we are playing good defense we are good offensively.”

The Yellow Jackets bolted out to a 15-2 lead and were clicking on all cylinders. The Wildcats (5-5) were packing it down low to stop Garrett and the Jackets buried five 3s – Warren had three and McClendon had two. Rock Taylor was pounding the boards and adding six points, while Garrett had eight.

The Wildcats pulled out to stop Oxford’s 3-point shooting in the second quarter and the Jackets went inside to Garrett. He poured in 10 points in the quarter as the Jackets went on scoring runs of 9-0, 7-0 and 6-0 to lead by 29 at the half.

It was bombs away again in the third, as Garrett started it off with a 3. McClendon followed with two and Justin Moore had one as the Jackets opened a 51-point lead following a 17-point run.

Moore pumped in eight points in the fourth quarter despite a running clock as the Jackets broke the century mark. –Brant Locklier
