Cardinals bounce back

Sacred Heart finds its rhythm in fourth quarter, rallies for ‘big road win’ over Holy Innocents

By East Alabama Sports Today

ATLANTA – Sacred Heart bounced back from a tough third quarter and may have turned an early corner on their season with a big fourth-quarter finish to beat Holy Innocents Episcopal School 52-50 in the Holiday Hoopsgiving Classic Saturday.

With top players Jayden Stone and Khalil Watkins battling through injuries, the Cardinals struggled with their offensive rhythm and were held under 40 points by quality opponents in each of their previous two games.

They had 32 points through the first three quarters Saturday and trailed by five going into the fourth quarter after being outscored 17-8 in the third, but scored 20 in the fourth quarter and held a three-point lead with 56 seconds left.

After shooting 14 of 37 from the floor in the first three quarters, the Cardinals (5-3) were 7-of-15 in the fourth, including two of their three 3-pointers (all by Watkins) in the game.

“We got really selfish in the third, which got us in a deficit,” Cardinals coach Ralph Graves said. “This was a big road win for us, especially against a talented group like Holy Innocents.”

Watkins finished with 12 points. Stone had 18 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Caleb Bowen also scored 12 points, eight off the bench in the first half on 4-of-6 shooting. Aaron Moore, who turned his ankle in the season opener, grabbed 11 rebounds.

Holy Innocents’ Chance Moore, a 6-5 sophomore shooting guard already with offers from Georgia and Rutgers, led all scorers with 21 points. He also grabbed nine rebounds.
