White Plains on cusp of history

By East Alabama Sports Today

The White Plains volleyball team is on the verge of history after beating Cherokee County 3-0 in a Class 4A Area 10 match Tuesday night.

The Lady Wildcats won 25-14, 25-23, 25-9, and in doing so can claim their second area title in 20 years and first since 2005 by avenging an earlier loss to Jacksonville at home Thursday night.

The Lady Wildcats are 14-14 this season and 3-1 in the area. If they beat Jacksonville – a team they haven’t beaten in at least eight years – they would hand the Lady Golden Eagles their third area loss and claim the title.

“It’s a huge area win and I’m beyond excited about that,” White Plains coach Ben Carroll said, “but to be completely honest I wasn’t worried about that. Tonight had nothing to do with who was on the other side of the net.

“I’ve told them they’ve got to concentrate more on themselves. We’ve been inconsistent. I challenged them tonight to play their best volleyball and not worry about who was on the other side of the net and not put extra pressure on themselves because it was an area match.”

The Lady Wildcats have come through a lot to get to this point. Carroll, a 14-year veteran coach of several sports, had zero experience with volleyball when he took the job and admits the players have taught him more about the game than he could have ever taught them. Seven of their regulars are freshmen or sophomores. They’ve overcome three “significant” injuries to starters – particularly their setters – and have adjusted to changes made on the fly.

In Tuesday night’s match, Gracie Morgan had 15 kills, Natalie Pinto had 18 assists, Reece Roberts had 14 assists and Morgan Huckaby had five digs.

“I really can’t express how proud I am of the girls for how they’ve worked this season because we’ve really overcome a lot of adversity,” Carroll said. “We’ve had to work through a lot and I’ve challenged them several times and instead of breaking down and quitting, they’ve risen to the occasion.”

And now they’re on the verge of history.

“To be honest winning area would be huge for the team and the school,” Carroll said, “but for, me a win on Thursday would be more about us playing consistently well as a team – that’s our most important thing right now. We have to show as a team that we can come out and compete at a high level day in and day out.

“I know winning the area would be huge, but as a coach I’m about getting the girls to play well any time we step on the court.”

Ohatchee splits

OHATCHEE – The Lady Indians (5-16) improved to 2-0 in their area with a 25-16, 25-18, 25-15 victory over Gaston. Senior Sydney Clements had nine kills and sophomore Gracee Haynes had eighth. Seniors Kaylee Wells and Regan Snow both had 10 digs. They later lost to 7A Gadsden City in two tight sets.
