With all that Scott Martin has going on these days a trip to the golf course is a welcomed getaway. To have a good round during those escapes is a bonus.

Between the end of spring practice, the end of the school year and the stretch run of a competitive campaign for county commissioner, the Ohatchee football coach is lucky to hit the links once a week, which doesn’t leave much room for expectations on his game.

But Friday he went to his happy place, turned in a 4-under-par 66 from the back tees and grabbed the first-round lead in the Wilfred Galbraith ACC Invitational at Anniston Country Club. He leads defending champion Dalton Chandler and reigning Class 1A-2A high school state champion Jacob LeCroy by two and Gary Wigington by three.

“This was one of those rounds for the old guys,” said Martin, 55.

It was his lowest round on the Calhoun County Golf Tour since winning the 2012 Silver Lakes Championship when he was not yet a member of the Tour.

He had six birdies, two bogeys, and hit 12 greens and 12 fairways. The most important stat of the day was he had only 26 putts (13 on each side).

He birdied 8 and 9 to get to 2-under and then sat through a lengthy rain delay. When he returned to the course, he just missed a birdie on 10 and then bogeyed the par-5 11th with a wedge in his hand for his third shot. But he closed strong, making birdies at 14 from eight feet, 15 from 35 feet and 17 from six feet.

“To be honest, I’m getting to play about one round a week and I kind of relish getting to play, so when I get to I’m not putting a lot of pressure on my game,” he said. “I do what I can do and kind of look forward to getting to play.

“I’ve been hitting it good and putting it good, but I guess I tried to get more out of my game than what I’m able to do. Now I am what I am. My goal is to hit it as straight as I can hit it, hit it on the green and make some putts, and if I make some putts I’ll shoot par. But you know how that goes – a 66 today can be a 76 tomorrow and not be that much different than what I did today.

“I’m just enjoying getting to play the game. I’m not putting a whole lot of pressure on myself.”
