MOUNTAIN BROOK – Pine Hill pro Cory Etter lost a close match in the semifinals but bounced back to win the consolation match of the Alabama-Northwest Florida PGA Section Match Play Championship.

Etter lost his semifinal match at Mountain Brook Club to Destin, Fla., teaching pro David Hanson 1 down, then bounced back to beat Jordan Debonis of The Ledges in the consolation match 3&2.

Etter was 3up through eight holes in the semifinals, but Hanson got hot and birdied six of the next seven holes.

Previous information

Etter won two tight matches Wednesday to reach the final day of the tournament.

He defeated host director of golf Jeff Jordan 2&1, and then rallied late in a match he had leading most of the day to eliminate Daniel Swomley of Perdido Bay Resort on the first extra hole.

He plays Destin, Fla., teaching pro David Hanson in the semifinals Thursday. The winner gets either Andrew Peyton of Indian Hills CC or Jordan DeBonis of The Ledges for the title.

Etter was 2 up through 11 holes in his quarterfinal match with Swomley, but lost the next three holes to fall behind for the first time on the day. He birdied 16 to get all square, lost 17, then made a 20-foot downhill birdie on 18 to force extra holes.

On the first extra hole he nearly holed his approach shot, then tapped in for the match-winning birdie.
