Donoho boys, White Plains & Glencoe girls claim section champions as several area teams advance to sub-state

Several Calhoun County area golf teams and individuals moved another step closer to the state tournament Monday with their play in sectional tournaments.

Donoho’s boys and the White Plains and Glencoe girls all scored sectional titles, while the boys and girls from Alexandria, the White Plains and Glencoe boys and Pleasant Valley girls all were sectional runnerups.

BOYS
CLASS 1A-2A

Donoho posted three scores in the 70s and scored 315 to win Section 3 at Goose Pond in Scottsboro. Jacob LeCroy led the Falcons with a 75, while county champion Harrison Hughston shot 78 and Jack Svensen 79. Westbrook’s William Wethington was medalist (73).

CLASS 3A
North Sand Mountain (348), Glencoe (383), Pleasant Valley (406) and Ohatchee (426) all advanced to substate from Section 3 at Twin Bridges in Gadsden. Piedmont’s Ethan Floyd (91) and Weaver seventh-grader Nick Ledbetter (101) advanced as individuals.

In Section 1, Thomas Ponder of Providence Christian shot an AHSAA record-tying 62 at Dothan Country Club to lead his team to a narrow victory. The Eagles shot 295 as a team and won by two shots.

CLASS 4A
The White Plains boys qualified all seven of the players they took to the sectional at Limestone Springs in Oneonta and finished second to Oneonta by two strokes for the Section 3 team championship.

The Wildcats counted a 77 from Nathan Griffin and 79s from Gage Miller, Wesley Jenkins and Andrew Miller. Cameron McCareeth and Josh Davis also qualified as individuals to the sub-state May 7 at Silver Lakes.

CLASS 5A
Hunter Watts and Zachary Nichols both shot 88 to help Alexandria post 361 and finish second in Section 3 to Mortimer Jordan at Cullman’s Cross Creek GC. The Valley Cubs also counted a 92 from Andrew Kilgore and 93 from Logan Goble. Etowah was third and Fairview fourth.

GIRLS
CLASS 4A-5A

The White Plains girls, led by Hanna Dyar’s 84 and Baylie Webb’s 87, shot 263 to win Section 3 at Gunters Landing in Guntersville. Alexandria was second with Gracie Muncher shooting 93. White Plains’ Caitlin Lewis also qualified as an individual. The substate is May 8 at Silver Lakes.

CLASS 1A-3A
Medalist Lauren Cole birdied both par-5s on Twin Bridges’ back nine, shot 8-over-par 80 and took medalist honors to lead Glencoe to the Section 3 championship at Twin Bridges. The Lady Jackets posted a team score of 294 as all four teams advanced to the substate May 8 at Silver Lakes.

Pleasant Valley was sectional runnerup (313), followed by Weaver (343) and Cedar Bluff (354). Piedmont’s Lexie Mitchell and PV’s Chloe Parris also advanced as individuals.
