Bulldogs advance; Indians swept

Piedmont sweeps Oakman to advance in Class 3A playoffs; Locust Fork rallies to beat Ohatchee, then sweep

By East Alabama Sports Today

OAKMAN – Piedmont got two strong pitching performances and continued to wield some big bats in sweeping Oakman 2-1 and 11-1 in the Class 3A baseball playoffs Friday night.

The Bulldogs (22-10) will host the winner of Saturday’s Lauderdale County-Plainview rubber game in the third round next week.

“We hadn’t been on a long road trip this year,” Piedmont coach Matt Deerman said. “To see the focus we had right out of the gate … was really good. I thought we played as solid defensively as we had all year. We made plays to get out of innings, pitches to get out of innings.

“Last week we had a chance to end the thing in five innings and drug it out. Tonight, we scored in every inning but the fourth. I was really pleased with the way we finished. I didn’t think we finished either game very well last week; we did tonight.”

Logan Pruitt and Mason Mohon both gave the Bulldogs complete games. Pruitt allowed six hits, an unearned run and struck out seven in the opener and Mohon gave up three hits and struck out five in the five-inning nightcap.

“Pruitt was extremely efficient,” Deerman said. “And Mohon blew them up.”

The Bulldogs got only three hits in the opener, but made them count. They scored both of their runs in the fourth inning on a run-scoring error with two outs and Brant Deerman’s RBI double.

Oakman scored its run on a wild pitch third strike, but Pruitt struck out the next batter to end the game.

The nightcap was all Piedmont. The Bulldogs answered Oakman’s run in the top of the first with four in the bottom of the inning, led 10-1 after three innings and Taylor Morrow hit a walk-off solo homer in the fifth to end the game.

Morrow went 2-for-3 with a double, homer and one RBI, Nick Johnson went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs, and Sean Smith went 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBIs.

Mohon gave up singles to Oakman’s first two batters of the game, then allowed only three batters over the minimum the rest of the game.

Ohatchee swept

LOCUST FORK — The Hornets parlayed a 9-8 come-from-behind victory in the opener into an 8-3 win in the nightcap to sweep Ohatchee in their Class 3A playoff series.

Jesse Sellers’s bases-loaded triple and Ben Glass’ sacrifice fly gave the Indians a 4-0 lead in the first inning of the first game, and they extended it 6-3 going to the sixth. But Locust Fork scored five in the sixth to take the lead, Ohatchee tied it with two runs scoring on a wild pitch in the seventh, then the Hornets won it in the bottom of the inning.

The nightcap was all Locust Fork. The Hornets will play the winner of Saturday’s West Morgan-Lexington rubber game next week in the third round.
