Sawyer playoff winner

Cedar Bluff junior wins medalist honors at White Plains event on first extra hole; Homewood wins team title, Wildcats second

By East Alabama Sports Today

SILVER LAKES – Cedar Bluff’s Nick Sawyer made a two-putt par on the first playoff hole to win medalist honors in the White Plains Boys Invitational Wednesday at Silver Lakes. Homewood won the team title.

Sawyer, a junior who finished second in last week’s Oxford Invitational, faced off with Westbrook Christian’s Jackson Bowman in the playoff on Mindbreaker No. 9. Both players shot 1-under-par 71 in regulation.

Sawyer hit the green in two, while Bowman stayed in the fringe with his second shot. Bowman chipped up and missed his putt for par coming back. Sawyer two-putted for the win.

Sawyer birdied his first hole of the day and added two more in the round. Bowman also birdied his first hole of the day, but fell into the playoff by making bogeys on each of his last two holes in regulation.

Homewood’s Ren Riley finished one shot out of the playoff. White Plains’ Andrew Miller finished fourth (73). Miller’s round featured four birdies on the 5,739-yard course.

Homewood won the team event by 10 shots over White Plains. The Patriots counted three scores in the 70s and in the top five. In addition to Miller’s 73, the Wildcats counted hole-in-one Kenny Okins’ 78, an 82 from Nathan Griffin and an 83 from Gage Miller.

Alexandria finished ninth and Oxford was 13th. Jake Munroe led Oxford with an 83. Hunter Watts posted Alexandria’s low score (90).
