Donoho opens its tennis season with pair of 9-0 sweeps of Pleasant Valley, girls drop only one game in singles

Youth was served Thursday at Anniston Country Club where the Donoho tennis teams captured season-opening 9-0 victories in both the boys and girls matches over Pleasant Valley.
Seventh-grader Jack Ballard showed that age did not matter as he knocked off Pleasant Valley junior Dakota Parr 8-4 in the first match of his high school career.
“It was a cool feeling,” Ballard said. “I did better than I thought. It was great and I am looking forward to the season.”
“Jack was real nervous before the match, but I told him to not be nervous, just keep the ball in play and you know that you can do this and he did,” Falcons coach Laurie Rigsby said. “I was impressed with his play.”
Junior Harrison Han, who only lost one regular-season match a year ago, came out blazing with a powerful serve and groundstrokes to win his season-opener, 8-0.
The Falcons have four seventh-graders on the girls’ team. Claire Hillman, Lily Draper, Mary Perry and Harper Pumroy all debuted their high school careers with victories.
Veteran eighth-grader Marella Hudson won impressively 8-0 at No. 1 singles.
“It was an exciting time and good to get off to a good start,” Hudson said.
