PV’s Faucett, Weaver’s Gaines score county’s highest finishes at second day of state championship meet

BIRMINGHAM – Pleasant Valley’s Rachel Faucett and Weaver’s Robert Gaines were the highest Calhoun County placers with runner-up finishes in their respective Class 1A-3A high jumps during Saturday’s final day of the State Indoor Track & Field Championship.

Faucett jumped 5-6 and lost out to ACA’s Helen Claire Edmonds, who tied the state record Faucett set in winning the event last year (5-7). PV teammate Brenna Harris was eighth (4-8).

Gaines (5-10) and teammate Amardric Elston (5-8) went 2-3 in their event behind winner Devin Gronewold of JB Pennington (6-0). Gaines made three attempts at 6-0. Both Weaver players had to hustle back after the meet to play in Weaver’s basketball game with Spring Garden later in the day.

Gaines also finished second in the long jump (19-10 3/4). Piedmont’s Cardavion Myers finished fourth in the event (19-7 3/4).

Myers (7.257) and teammate Darrian Bossey (7.30) went 3-5 in the boys 1A-3A boys 60.

Here are the other scoring performances from Calhoun County athletes Saturday:

Pleasant Valley’s Connor Wolfe seventh in 1A-3A boys 400 (54.01), Skyler Mcleod was eighth in the high jump (5-4) and Mary Robbins was sixth in girls 60 hurdles (11.29). The Raiders’ boys 4×400 relay team — Reagan King, Connor Wolfe, Skyler Mcleod and Matisse Miller — were third (3:38.65).

Alexandria’s Abby Nunnelly was seventh in 4A-5A girls 1600 (5:39.82).

Weaver’s Gary Wallace was fourth in 1A-3A boys 60 hurdles (9.40), while Ohatchee’s Tyler Hester was seventh (10.20).

Weaver’s Brandon Boyce finished third in the shot put (46-3 1/4).

Piedmont’s Micah Benefield was fourth in the 1A-3A shot (44-7)

Ohatchee was sixth in the girls 1A-3A 4×800 relay (11:48.38) and the boys were fifth in their 4×800 relay (9:15.65)

Oxford finished seventh in the 6A boys 4×800 relay (8:58.54).

Alexandria sophomore Kalee Johnson produced the county’s only state champion this year, winning the 4A-5A girls shot put Friday with a throw of 34-5 1/2.

In the girls team standings, Pleasant Valley was eighth (18) and Ohatchee 19th (3) in 1A-3A and Alexandria was 10th (10) and White Plains 26th (1) in 4A-5A.

In the boys team standings, Weaver was seventh (32.50), Piedmont ninth (31), Pleasant Valley 10th (22.5) and Ohatchee 15th (6) in 1A-3A, White Plains was 17th (8) in 4A-5A and Oxford 21st (3) in 6A.
