Arab scores a decision in the final match of the day to deny Cleburne County the 1A-5A State Duals championship

BIRMINGHAM – Clay Jones scored a 5-2 decision over Christopher Higgins at 152 in the final match of the night to give Arab a 34-30 victory Saturday and turn back Cleburne County’s valiant bid for a Class 1A-5A State Duals championship.
Cleburne County rallied from a 19-point deficit midway through the match to get it back to a point going into the final match.
Arab (41-1) led 10-9 after four bouts, then seemingly took control of the match by winning then next four (two pins, two decisions) to open a 28-9 lead.
But the Tigers (17-1) climbed back in it by winning the next three – a decision by Dylan Turner at 120 and pins by Mathew Williamson (126) and Shane Beason (132). They were now down four with three bouts to go.
Garrett McClendon stopped Cleburne County’s run with a decision at 138, but the Tigers’ Zachary Williamson set the stage for a winner-take-all final when he pinned Jonathan Morgan in 1:34 at 145.
Bob Jones, coached by former Ohatchee coach Matt Sweatman, won the Class 7A Duals title earlier in the day with a 34-29 win over Thompson.
All three championship matches — 1A-5A, 7A and Oxford’s victory over Gardendale in 6A Friday night — came down to the final match
