GLENCOE – Dalton Dodd remembers how badly it felt walking out of the gym last year after his Alexandria basketball team lost in the Glencoe Holiday Shootout championship game to a Boaz team that seemingly couldn’t miss from 3-point range.

He didn’t want to feel that way again and was determined to do all he could to ensure it wouldn’t happen again.

Literally, he did everything as the Valley Cubs edged Fort Payne 84-83 to win this year’s championship.

The UAH signee scored 39 points, grabbed 21 rebounds, scored the go-ahead layup with eight seconds left that turned into the game-winning basket and made the steal at midcourt that killed the Wildcats’ last-second chance to send the Valley Cubs home with that rainy-day feeling again.

In the girls championship game, Glencoe used a genuine team effort to beat Fort Payne 59-49 and win its own tournament for the first time. The win avenged a loss to the Lady Wildcats in last year’s championship game.

In the other boys games, Glencoe beat Ragland 63-45, Cedar Bluff beat Sardis 66-54, and top-ranked Oneonta finally got past an Ohatchee team that stayed with it for two and a half quarters, 53-41.

In the other girls games, Boaz defeated Ohatchee 60-39 in spite of seven 3-pointers by the Tribe’s Kourtney Shuler, Oxford beat Oneonta 53-45 behind 21 points from Anna Bolton, and Cedar Bluff came from behind to beat Wellborn 70-64.
