Bulldogs breakthrough

Anniston squeezes out the first team win in its program’s history at White Plains; Hammonds, Nunnelly win individual races

By East Alabama Sports Today

Ohatchee’s Gabe Hammonds and Abby Nunnelly of girls team champion Alexandria won individual races and the Anniston boys won the first team race in their program’s history by the slimmest of margins to highlight the Wildcat Fall Classic at White Plains Saturday.

The race drew 15 schools, including nine from Calhoun County in their final run before Thursday’s county meet at Oxford Lake.

Nunnelly, who finished third here in the inaugural race on the Wildcat Trail in August, led the girls across the line in 20:30. Mary Shelton of Jacksonville was second at 21:20. The Lady Cubs put all five of their scorers in the top 10 counters and scored 28 points, well ahead of runner-up Oxford and third-place White Plains.

Hammonds beat Anniston freshman Miciah Myles to the finish in the boys race. Hammonds finished in 17:31.10 to Myles’ 17:33.11, but because Myles beat reigning county champion Reed Robinson of Oxford by three-tenths of a second for second place, the Bulldogs had enough points to push past host White Plains for the team title.

The Bulldogs, who formed a team for the first time this summer, put their first four runners in the top 12 and scored 59 points to White Plains’ 60. James Haynes was sixth, Tony White 11th, eighth-grader Christian Myles 12th and Hunter Rouse 28th.

“We were pretty excited about winning the meet,” Anniston coach Lisa Howard said. “I didn’t think we won but they were liked, yes, we did coach, we won. I told them we would know when they called our name and when they called their name they started into their little secret dance they do. They ran good.”
