Sacred Heart’s Big 3, White Plains’ McGuirk finalists for best in class, Mr. Basketball

By East Alabama Sports Today

Someone from Sacred Heart is going to be the Class 1A boys basketball player of the year in the state of Alabama. It’s a lock.

D.J. Heath, Kevion Nolan and Diante Wood – the core of Sacred Heart’s third straight state championship this season – are the three finalists for the top player in their classification.

Just as there has never been three players from one team on the first team of any all-state team since the Alabama Sports Writers Association took stewardship of the award in 1983, it’s doubtful three players from the same team have been the finalists for top player honors in a classification.

All the players who are finalists are up for Mr. and Miss Basketball. The awards will be announced April 4 in Montgomery.

White Plains’ senior Michael McGuirk is a finalist in Class 4A. He is joined by Herb Jones of Hale County and Isaac Chatman of Cordova.

Wildcats coach Chris Randall was on the phone with McGuirk shortly after the finalists were announced Tuesday night and described his senior point forward as “pumped.”

“Mike is so deserving of this honor,” Randall said. “He’s been a great player for us through the years, but he’s an even better teammate. We are so proud of and for him.”
