Oxford completes season ‘Grand Slam’ with first wrestling state title; Slick, King among six local wrestlers winnning individual crowns

HUNTSVILLE — Wesley Slick couldn’t remember anything happening on any of his other birthdays remotely as cool as what happened Saturday.

The Oxford sophomore was one of six East Alabama wrestlers winning individual titles and the Yellow Jackets made his 16th birthday even sweeter by winning their first-ever state crown at the AHSAA Wrestling Championships at the Von Braun Center.

The Yellow Jackets scored points from all 13 wrestlers they qualified, had eight state placers, two individual champions and won Class 6A with 195 points, 23.5 points ahead of runner-up Southside-Gadsden. They took a comfortable lead into the final day and had it clinched well before the championship round.

Arab won Class 1A-5A with 176.5 points. Cleburne County was second (123), Alexandria fourth (104.5) and Weaver sixth (84). Wellborn and Ohatchee both finished in the top 20.

“My kids did a great job,” Oxford coach Matt Hicks said. “They worked hard all year. It’s not a shock. It’s not an upset. My kids earned it. … There’s an ‘s’ at the end of ‘Yellow Jackets;’ it’s there for a reason.”

To illustrate that team-first concept, when it came time to accept the trophy, instead of the Yellow Jackets rushing the presenter, AHSAA executive director Steve Savarese, in the middle of the mat the wrestlers allowed Josh Thomas to singularly do the honors.

Thomas was denied the chance to wrestle in the 195 finals after suffering a broken collarbone in his semifinal match Friday; he thought about giving it a shot, he said, and suspected he’d have done quite well, but couldn’t get it past assistant coach Scott Peavey.

Oxford’s Wesley Slick and Matt King won individual state titles, as did Alexandria’s Christian Knop, Weaver’s Nick Souder, Ohatchee’s Caleb Montgomery and Cleburne County’s Tyler Mayfield.

Injured Thomas and teammates Jakob Chisolm and Clay Webb, Alexandria’s Jaden New, Cleburne County’s Christian Seale and Weaver’s Caleb Allison were state runner-ups. Webb lost a 4-3 decision to Stanhope Elmore’s Jacob Andrews that was voted the best match in 6A.

With the win, the Yellow Jackets completed the season “Grand Slam.” They also won the Calhoun County, State Duals (beating Southside-Gadsden) and South Sectional titles.

“We want to finish as well as we can everywhere we go,” Hicks said. “This is the ultimate prize in our state, this is where you want to be when it’s all said and done.

“It’s a process. We weren’t very good in December. But our kids believed we could get here and that’s why we’re here. Everywhere I’ve been blessed to coach I’ve had amazing kids and these are no different. They believed they could.”

Hicks said he started believing the Jackets could be “really, really good” after the Jackets’ quad match with Southside, Pinson Valley and Clay-Chalkville in which they beat then-No. 2 Southside.

Slick was the first Yellow Jacket to win an individual championship when he took a 5-2 decision from Cole Blackwell of Wetumpka for the 126 crown.

He realized around Christmas his birthday fell on the date of the state finals, but never said anything about it. He just kept working to bring the two events together. He said having the team title already clinched took “a lot” of pressure off from his match.

“It was awesome,” he said. “This is probably the coolest thing I’ve ever done (on his birthday).”

King returned to the top step of the podium for the first time since his freshman year when he scored a 13-3 major decision over Trevor Muncey of Gardendale at 160.

His drive to return was evident from the start as attacked his opponent from the opening move. Normally, he’d have been overjoyed at the personal accomplishment, but he was more excited about another match that reached an equally successful conclusion about 90 minutes earlier.

“This wasn’t even my favorite thing today,” he said of his victory. “My favorite thing was when Jack Peavey won (his fifth-place 170 match) and we had it sealed for our team, and that was a lot more special to me than that title. For our team to (win it), the people who’ve worked all year, it’s just huge. I just love it for them.

“I told them yesterday if we go out there and we wrestle any, we’ll win. I told them if they wanted to, they’d be state champs today. No one thought we could, I didn’t think we could and coach didn’t think we could at the beginning of the year, but we’ve worked really hard, everyone got better all year and everyone’s looking the best they are right now.”
