Oxford battles, but falls

Lady Jackets give Brewer all it can handle for a half; rallies from an early deficit to take brief lead before falling behind at half

SOMERVILLE – If A.P. Brewer looked at Oxford’s record and thought it was going to have an easy one in the Class 6A girls subregionals Monday, it had another thing coming.

Oxford gave the Lady Patriots all they could handle for the better part of three quarters before falling 55-41.

The Lady Jackets (6-21) battled back from a 17-9 deficit to take a 23-21 lead in the second quarter before Brewer jumped back in front 24-23 at the break.

“That was one thing,” Oxford coach Melissa Bennett said. “Game One of the season against Gadsden City. We were up against a really good, established team and I told them I don’t care what that scoreboard says it’s how hard you fight and the effort you put out on that floor and I feel like with our record nobody would expect us to play as hard as we played all season long and it was no different tonight.

“That’s the special thing about this group. They may not have had a ton or just stick-to-it talent, but their effort was always there. The fight was always there.”

Bennett told her players at halftime to prepare for a determined Brewer five in the second half because they had played them so tight in the first. The Lady Patriots got a couple steals, hit a couple 3s and suddenly they were back up 11.

“They could shoot better than anybody we’ve seen all season, so I was proud of the girls with how we defended them at the 3-point line,” Bennett said. “They were extremely, extremely physical, even moreso than Southside as far as scrappiness and active hands. We did a fantastic job not giving them easy baskets.”
