Jackets, Cubs lead sectionals

Oxford holds a commanding lead in 6A South, Alexandria holds a slim lead in 1A-5A South; 46 county wrestlers have qualified for state

MONTGOMERY – Oxford holds a commanding lead in Class 6A and Alexandria holds a slim lead in Class 1A-5A after Friday’s first day of the AHSAA Super Sectional Wrestling Championships.
The Yellow Jackets, who recently won the 6A State Duals championship, has 266 points and nearly a 100-point lead over Wetumpka.
All 13 wrestlers the Yellow Jackets have taken to the Super Sectional have qualified for next week’s state championship in Huntsville. Ten of them are wrestling for sectional titles today.
Alexandria holds an 8.5-point lead over Moody in 1A-5A. The Valley Cubs posted 160 points through the first day of competition, followed by Moody (151.5), Weaver (147.5), Tallassee (141) and Leeds (140).
The Valley Cubs and Weaver both have qualified seven for the state championship and four vying for sectional titles today. Wellborn has nine qualifiers.
Cleburne County is sixth, Wellborn is seventh, Ranburne 12th, Ohatchee and Saks are tied for 13th.
Piedmont is 13th in the 1A-5A North Super Sectional in Birmingham
Calhoun County has qualified 28 wrestlers in Montgomery and five in Birmingham for the state championships. Twelve are wrestling for weight class titles today, including head-to-head matches at 106 and 220.
