WEAVER – Tournament MVP Paul Hubbard led four Weaver scorers in double figures with 17 points and the Bearcats hit 21 of 37 free throws in wild 81-55 victory that earned them the Class 3A Area 9 championship.

Wellborn lost its top scorer, Blake Hanson, to an ejection in the second quarter and its offense wasn’t quite the same. Devin Machristie did as much as he could to keep the Panthers in it, scoring 23 points, 18 in the second half.

Robert Gaines also had 17 points for Weaver. London Knight had 16 and Amardric Elston had 15.

The Bearcats now host the loser of tonight’s Area 10 title game between Glencoe and Piedmont in the Class 3A subregional. Wellborn travels to the Area 10 champion.

Talladega 76, Clay Central 69

LINEVILLE – Tournament MVP Jae-Lyn Russ had a big game and Fred Dickerson, who usually starts off fast, had a big second half, as the Tigers avenged two earlier losses and ended Clay Central’s 16-game winning streak to win the Class 5A Area 10 championship.

The Volunteers succeeded in fouling out both of Talladega’s big men, but not before Russ recorded 13 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Tigers. Dickerson had 13 of his 15 points in the second half, including going 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter, and also dealt five assists. Ashton Duncan scored 13 of his game-high 21 points in the second half and Jarvis McKenzie had a strong defensive game.

The Tigers held both of the Vols’ top scorers, Davyn Flenord and Joe Bullock, without a field goal in the first half. Flenord finished with 14 points and Bullock to seven (all in the second half). Ben Street scored 13 of his team-high 19 points in the fourth quarter as the Vols tried to mount a charge.

Both teams advance to the sub-regional where Talladega will host the loser of Friday’s Mortimer Jordan-Corner game Tuesday at 7 p.m. and Clay Central will travel to the Area 11 champion.

Alexandria 57, Douglas 40

ATTALLA — Alexandria hit 17 of 24 free throws in the fourth quarter to stave off Douglas and gain a spot in the Class 5A Area 13 title game opposite host Etowah.

Dalton Dodd was 8-of-10 from the line in the quarter to fuel his game-high 15 points. Josh Tucker was 5-for-6 in the quarter.

Jake Weathington scored 14 points on the strength of four 3-pointers. He and Landon Williams played a big role early in the game, scoring all of the Valley Cubs’ points in the second quarter.

“Jake and Landon really saved us in the second quarter,” Cubs coach Jason Johnson said.

The win gets Alexandria into the Class 5A subregional, where they will play either Scottsboro or Guntersville Tuesday night.
