ANNISTON – Caleigh Cortez, playing on a sore ankle, scored 15 of her game-high 23 points in the middle two quarters Tuesday night to help Weaver take control of their area opener in an eventual 61-53 victory over Wellborn.

The game was tied at 10 after the first quarter, but Cortez had six in the second quarter helping the Lady Bearcats (3-4) open a 25-20 halftime lead and nine in the third when they stretched the cushion to 11. Vanessa Carter led Wellborn with 21 points.

“Cortez was a warrior tonight,” Weaver coach Gary Atchley said. “We finally executed a game plan for four quarters. I love this team and, to be honest, they expect to get a lot better.”
