RAGLAND — The Purple Devils got two strong pitching performances to win their opening round series in the Class 1A playoffs.
Jeremy Burnham threw a two-hitter in the first game and senior Jagger Phillips spun a perfect game in the nightcap. Both pitchers struck out eight.
Phillips didn’t allow a ball out of the infield in his gem.
“He threw all three of his pitches for strikes and the only got behind one hitter — and that was my fault with bad pitch-calling to a batter,” Ragland coach Rodney Lipscomb said.
Grant Newton had two hits for Ragland in the first game. In the nightcap, Stoney Merritt went 3-for-3 and Burnham had two hits.
The Purple Devils will host the Shades Mt. Christian-Victory Christian winner next Friday.
SOFTBALL
Oxford 7, Piedmont 2
PIEDMONT — Taylor Ellison and JoJo Skinner both hit RBI doubles in a four-run second inning that got the third-ranked Lady Jackets (30-8) started and Skinner made it stand with 11 strikeouts from the circle.
Ashlyn Miller went 3-for-4, Amber Dempsey had two hits and Skinner and Ashleigh Reaves both had two RBIs.
Kaitlyn Ridley homered for Piedmont (22-16).
Spring Garden 9, Pleasant Valley 7
JACKSONVILLE – Spring Garden took advantage of 10 Pleasant Valley errors to win the battle of top 10 teams at Jacksonville State.
The Lady Panthers (28-8), ranked second in Class 1A, took a 6-5 lead with two runs in the fifth and extended it to 9-5 with three in the sixth.
Atleigh Brannon went 5-for-5 for PV, Mckinley Parris went 3-for-3 and Mikayla Kendrick homered with one of her two hits. Taylor Williams and Alisa St. John also had two hits for the Lady Raiders (25-14-1), ranked ninth in Class 3A.
