Layton Bussey was in a hurry, but he wasn’t in a rush.

The White Plains senior had prom to go to later in the day, but before that he went out and fired a bogey-free 4-under-par 68 to win low medalist at the Calhoun County Boys Golf Championship at Pine Hill Country Club.

He shot 7-under 137 for the two days and won by 11 over Donoho’s Jacob Lecroy. He was 7-under on the par-5s for the weekend, which made up for not scoring in the middle of his round.

“There was motivation for me to go low,” Bussey said. “A lot of good players graduated and everybody was saying the field was weak — I disagree.

“I wanted to go out and make a statement.”

White Plains won the team title by six over Donoho. The Wildcats shot 304 as a team in the field round and finished at 620 for the tournament. Donoho shot 313 for the second day in a row.

In addition to Bussey’s winning round, White Plains counted a 77 from No. 2 Nathan Griffin and a 78 from No. 5 P.J. Sotelo. Griffin was the tournament’s third low medalist.

“It’s just amazing,” Wildcats coach Marcus Harrell said. “I’m just extremely proud of the group. They fought like crazy today. Donoho definitely didn’t give it away; our boys went out there and earned the trophy today.

“It was a war the whole day. It came down to the last couple holes and I’m extremely proud of the way they finished.”
