Bearcats take two

Rodgers, Elston deliver pins in the clutch to lift Weaver over Moody for the sweep

By East Alabama Sports Today

WEAVER — For a bunch that doesn’t profess to be a good duals team, the Weaver wrestling team just continues to crank out the victories.

The Bearcats picked up two more wins Thursday night, beating Saks 66-18 and Moody 42-39. The sweep ran their record to 25-7 in dual matches this season.

The Bearcats trailed Moody 39-30 going into the last two contested matches of the meet, but Chase Rodgers (195) and Matt Elston (220) both delivered pins to put them over the top.

“Just veteran guys doing what they’ve doing all year and helping us grind out another win,” Weaver coach Andy Fulmer said. “We lost a close decision in the match before and those two picked up the slack. They took care of business.”

Rodgers, Elston, Cody Souder (103), Nick Souder (113), Kyle Clapper (145), Tyler Johnson (170) and Caleb Allison (285) all went 2-0. The Souders and Rodgers wrestled two matches.

Nick Souder is now 38-1 on the year, Allison is 35-2 and Rodgers 35-3.

The Bearcats put their duals proficiency to the test this week at the Leeds Duals. Ohatchee also will be in the field.
