Nunnelly record paces Cubs

Alexandria ninth-grader sets Noccalula Falls course girls record; PV second in both team runs

By East Alabama Sports Today

GADSDEN – Ninth-grader Abby Nunnelly set a course record and led a 1-2 Alexandria finish that carried the Valley Cubs to the girls title in the Etowah County Trail Invitational cross-country meet Saturday.

Nunnelly covered the Noccalula Falls 4C course in 21:26.72. Teammate Chloe Brown finished second 21:41.34.

The Lady Cubs put all five of their runners among the top 10 team counters and scored 26 points, edging Pleasant Valley by six points.

Emily McFarland was fifth overall, Sarah Kilgore eighth and Carolina McFarland was 12th, but scored 10th-place team points.

“To have two girls that close together at the top of the pack is huge, but the girls 3-4-5 are getting faster,” Alexandria coach Phillip Hartsfield said.

PV places four runners in the top 10, with Emma Hood and seventh-grader Trinity Roberts finishing third and fourth, respectively.

Alexandria and Pleasant Valley also played big roles in the boys meet.

Alexandria’s Lane Trapp finished second individually (18:23.11), while PV finished second as a team. LAMP won the boys title, placing all five of its runners in the top 11.

Anniston’s Zebadee Lunsford was fourth individually (18:38.43).
