Rowland continues to lead

FAIRVIEW — Roger Rowland shot 5-under 66 for the second day in a row and opened a 6-shot lead over Danny Gonzales in the Yellowhammer Open at Chesley Oaks.
Meanwhile, Bob Flanagan shot 4-under 67 to grab a share of the lead in the Super Seniors Division with five-time PGA Tour winner Danny Edwards. They’re at 6-under 136 for two days, one shot ahead of Mike Beaver, who entered the day tied for the division lead with Edwards.
The key to Rowland’s success so far has been his play on the back nine. He has played the side in 8-under for two days.
Most of the players in the field will move over to Cider Ridge for next week’s Oxford Senior Open. The Oxford field now has 16 pros with the addition of Alan Brazin of Pinson and Jim Doing of Verona, Wis.
ETTER-WIGINGTON WIN: Pine Hill pro Cory Etter and Gary Wigington, the reigning Pine Hill Invitational champion and Calhoun County Player of the Year, teamed for an 8-under-par 63 to share the win in the National Car Rental Pro-Am at Timberline Golf Club Thursday.
Etter and Wigington made eight birdies and 10 pars in the PGA Dixie Section event. They finished tied with Decatur driving range pro Ned Martin and State Four-Ball champion Matt Gourgeot, and to avoid the playoff one was declared the gross winner and the other the net winner.
Etter and Wigington made four birdies on each side, including a string of four in a row on either side of the turn. They missed a three-footer on 12 that would have extended the string and birdied two of their last three holes.
“We both played good,” Etter said. “We had pretty much both of us in every hole. We made a good team.”
Anniston Country Club’s Jake Spott and Lance Evans finished tied for third in the net division (64), while Silver Lakes’ Brennan Clay and Jeremy McGatha were tied for ninth in the gross division (67).
