Rowland grabs lead

Florida pro shoots bogey-free 66, leads Yellowhammer Open by 3

FAIRVIEW – Roger Rowland made an eagle and three back-nine birdies to shoot a bogey-free 5-under-par 66 Wednesday and grab the first-round lead in the Sunbelt Seniors Tour Yellowhammer Open at Chesley Oaks Golf Club.
Rowland, of Ocala, Fla., leads by three shots over Danny Gonzales of Round Rock, Texas, and four over Gilbert Gilbert III of Ooltewah, Tenn. All three players are in the field of next week’s Oxford Senior Open at Cider Ridge Golf Club.
Rowland eagled the par-5 seventh hole to turn in 2-under, then made birdies on 11, 14 and 18. Gonzales had four birdies and two bogeys. Gilbert turned in 1-over, then birdied two of his last three holes to move into third place.
Mike Beaver of Newberry, Fla., and former PGA Tour winner Danny Edwards of Scottsdale, Ariz., both shot 3-under 68 to share a one-shot lead in the Super Seniors division. Beaver played the back nine in 4-under. Edwards played a bogey-free round.
