AHSAA officials play it safe with bad weather predicted for the area

BIRMINGHAM — One thing coaches don’t ever like to have is distractions, but some just can’t be helped.
Because of the threat of bad weather Wednesday, AHSAA officials Tuesday decided to postpone the day’s games to Thursday and add a secondary venue.
“We made this decision based on the EMA’s current weather conditions,” AHSAA executive director Steve Savarese said. “We had hoped this would not be necessary but at this time this is in the best interest of our teams, schools and communities.”
The changes will impact the Anniston girls’ 5A state semifinal against Brewbaker Tech, Sacred Heart’s 1A boys title game against Sunshine and to a lesser degree Piedmont’s 3A boys title game.
Anniston’s girls now will play at the Bill Harris Arena at the CrossPlex at 6 p.m. Thursday. Sacred Heart’s boys now will play for their first state championship 10:30 a.m. in the BJCC. Piedmont’s final is now two and a half hours later at 5:30 p.m. Friday at BJCC.
“It’s going to have some kind of impact I know,” Anniston coach Eddie Bullock said. “I’ll have to look at it as a position and the position thing is the other team has to go through the same thing.
“If I had my druthers I’d rather play tomorrow. I’m a concrete, consequential coach — I think things in order and a certain way. I’m not real big on change. That’s the way I was coached and I feel the same way.
“I know it’s not the state’s fault. It’s the will of God. I think we’ll be all right. I hope we can bring it home.”
