Roundup: Saks sweeps White Plains, boys clinch area title; Anniston, Piedmont swept

By East Alabama Sports Today

WHITE PLAINS – Saks rode its usually strong outside shooting and 22 points by Quen Williams to beat White Plains 72-54, complete a sweep of its area schedule and clinch top seed and home-court advantage in the Class 4A Area 11 tournament.

Williams did all of his scoring in the second half after the Wildcats (19-3) rallied from an early deficit to take a 33-29 halftime lead. He had five 3-pointers; four other players had two each.

Michael McGuirk hit three 3-pointers in the first quarter to stake White Plains to an early lead and finished with 20 points. Darion Coleman scored 10 of his 14 points in the second quarter to help Saks rally.

Gadsden City 87, Anniston 75

Tray Croft, the offensive MVP of the Calhoun County Tournament, scored a career-high 34 points, but the Bulldogs couldn’t overcome an early hole.

The Bulldogs fell behind 20-8 in the first quarter, then played the Titans even the rest of the way. Croft had 11 in the second quarter and 17 in the third. Shon McKinney scored 24 points off the bench to lead the Titans.

Cherokee County 68, Piedmont 64

CENTRE – The Bulldogs gave top-ranked Cherokee County all it could handle, but just didn’t have enough to overcome the combination of Quartez Henderson and Tyren Dupree.

Henderson scored 21 and Dupree 19 as the Warriors won for the 23rd time in 25 games. Joel Wester added 15.

Bayley Blanchard led Piedmont (15-11) with 16 points. Darnell Jackson had 15 and Taylor Hayes had 10.

At halftime, Cherokee County officials retired the jersey of former CCHS multi-sport star Coty Blanchard. Blanchard is now a prospect in the Tampa Bay Rays’ minor-league system.
