UPDATES to fix scoring glitches at Grissom tournament

ODENVILLE – Nick Souder continued his march toward a presumptive spot in the state finals with a win at 108 and Weaver placed two others in championship bouts while finishing second to powerful Arab in the Jeremy Ragsdale Invitational at St. Clair County High School.
The Bearcats scored 156.5 points; Arab had 282. Oxford, the only other Calhoun County team in the field, finished fourth (152.5). The Yellow Jackets, missing two of their top wrestlers (injured), missed third by a half-point.
Souder, now 44-1, pinned Kage Robertson of Susan Moore in 3:36 to win his weight class; it was the first time they’ve wrestled this season.
“He was dominant in his matches,” Weaver coach Andy Fulmer said.
Chase Rogers (197) and Caleb Allison (287) both lost one-point decisions in the championship bouts of their weight divisions. Jacob Howard finished third at 147 and Christian Pettus was fourth at 128.
“All my kids wrestled well, even the ones who didn’t place,” Fulmer said. “We had 11 kids and they all contributed. We were banged up and sickly, but the kids dug deep and found a way to win matches. I’m very proud of this group of kids. They are special.”
Oxford’s Hunter Lee scored a major decision over Brett Staggs of Moody, 16-4, to win the 184-pound division.
Mason Blakeney (122) and Jacob Shake (154) lost in their respective championship bouts. Hayden Carpenter (115), Quintez Pearson (134) and Clay Webb (287) all were third in their weight divisions.

Sportsmed JV/Freshman Invitational
HUNTSVILLE – Fletcher Swindall, Ty Brown, Christian Knop and Jack McCormick all won their weight divisions and seven of eight Alexandria wrestlers who competed placed at Grissom High School.
Daniel Longoria finished second (JV 222), Lane Trapp was third (JV 115-122) and Aaron Whittaker was fourth (JV 128).
Swindall pinned Trent Young of Athens in 1:11 to win the Freshman 105 division. Brown went 5-0 and scored pins in each of his last four bouts inside 90 seconds in JV 147. Knop won a 7-0 decision over Carlos Burwell of Sparkman in JV 162. McCormick had two decisions and a pin in JV 197.
