GADSDEN – The schools are only a couple miles apart, but they’ll be heading up 431 Tuesday to meet in the one of the more intriguing local matchups of the year.

Alexandria and Saks are on a collision course after they won semifinal games in the Riley Whitaker Classic at Gadsden State.

Alexandria swamped Glencoe 78-49, while Saks took out Weaver 68-40. When Alexandria wins, it does so by large margins. Saks can score some points.

The teams will play for the title at 7:30 p.m. Weaver plays Glencoe at 6 for third place, and Jacksonville plays Westbrook Christian at 4:30.

Saks 68, Weaver 40

Makel Taylor scored 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the fourth-ranked 4A Wildcats (8-1), while Quen Williams scored 13 and Darion Coleman had 11. Paul Hubbard led Weaver with 10 points.

Jacksonville 63, Ashville 56

Jacksonville coach Ryan Chambless returned to the bench Monday after missing his team’s last game with a bout of the stomach flu and directed the Golden Eagles to a win.

“I feel good about a win,” Chambless said.

The Golden Eagles were 2 for 23 from beyond the 3-point arc in their opening round loss to Glencoe, but were 3 of 12 Monday. Just as he did on Saturday, Cam Horton hit all of them (3-for-7).

Horton led all scorers with 24 points. Sid Thurmond added 19 points and Savon Parker had nine points and six rebounds.

Nick Looney led Ashville with 21 points.

Logan Williamson hit three of his four 3-pointers in the second quarter and Jordan Griswald scored 12 of his 17 points in the third quarter as Faith steadily gained control after a tight beginning.

Williamson finished with 14 points. Ryan Crosby added 13 for the Lions (9-5). JCA’s Walker Messer led all scorers with 19 points, while Daylon Brackett and Kris Armprester had 12 apiece.

Jordan and Kayla Barnes combined for nine points in the fourth quarter as the Thunder pulled away from the Lions after losing an early 10-point lead.

Kayla Barnes led JCA with 17 points, with Sarah Crook adding 15 and Jordan Barnes 10. The Thunder led by 10 after the first quarter and six at halftime, but trailed by one entering the fourth quarter.

Madison Stephens scored 11 of her 17 points and Jaz Groce had eight of her 12 in the third quarter that brought Faith back.

WRESTLING

ALEXANDRIA — The Alexandria wrestling program finished second in its first-ever junior high wrestling tournament Monday. Defending 5A state champion Arab – now a 6A program — won the nine-team event.

Varsity wrestlers Fletcher Swindall (114), Matthew Schmaltz (121) and Christian Knop (167) all won their weight classes. Varsity B-teamers Brandon Heard (147) and Jack McCormick (HWT) finished second.

The Valley Cubs host the first varsity tournament in their program’s two-year history Monday.
