The Wellborn girls basketball team celebrated a “Dymond jubilee” Thursday night as Dymond Miles scored 23 points and led the Panthers to a 39-30 win over scrappy Donoho.

The home-standing Falcons were looking for their first win and would not go away. It was like playing basketball in a blackberry patch the way the Falcons scratched and clawed and dove after every pass and shot.

“Donoho played their tails off; you’ve got take your hats off to them as they played well,” Wellborn coach Stephen Gay said. “We did not play very well. We have to shoot the ball better and rebound better than we did tonight.”

Every time the Panthers (3-2) would try to pull away, the Falcons (0-3) would counter with a run to get back in it. Miles pumped in nine first-quarter points that included a 3-pointer. The Panthers led 17-10 at the half, but had to earn it as Donoho was all over the court playing scrappy defense.

Carrie Mullinax had five points in a 7-0 Wellborn run that pushed the lead to 31-18 early in the fourth quarter.

Donoho rallied with an 8-0 to draw within five with three minutes to play, but Dynasty Miles hit two buckets down the stretch to put the game in the win column for Wellborn. Miles finished with six points.

Woodfin led Donoho with 12 points. Heathcock added eight.

JACKSONVILLE – The Golden Eagles came within 25 seconds and a three-seconds violation from hitting triple digits.

Jacksonville opened a 32-0 first-quarter lead and settled in to work on things for the future. None of their 15 players played more than 14 minutes and 14 scored.

Dasia Kirksey and Kyra Williams led the Golden Eagles with 16 points each. Kirksey also grabbed eight rebounds. Kelsey Ervin had seven rebounds. Angel Kidd had seven assists and six of Jacksonville’s 32 steals.

Keara Scott had seven points, nine rebounds and four blocked shots for Weaver.

Wellborn didn’t lose anything defensively in the break. The Panthers returned for the second half and held Donoho to five field goals the rest of the game. It helped them build their biggest lead 46-28.

Donoho’s Justin Foster was in foul trouble most of the game and had only 11 points.
