Piedmont wins DY AAA state opener

TROY – Defending champion Piedmont outlasted a three-hour rain delay and Oxford Black to win its Dixie Youth AAA state tournament opener 11-1 in four innings Saturday.

Cassius Fairs threw a one-hitter, not allowing a hit until the fourth inning. He also had two hits.

Jack Lamey hit a two-out, two-run single in the first inning. Jack Hayes hit a grand slam and had five RBIs. And Slade Haney had an RBI double.

Piedmont returns to action Sunday at 4 p.m. against either East Montgomery or Decatur American. Oxford Black looks to bounce back at 2.

In the state O-Zone tournament in Fairhope, the Oxford Black all-stars gave up too many long balls and didn’t have enough offense to match and lost to Enterprise 10-2.

Five of Enterprise’s 10 hits were home runs. Oxford managed only three hits – homers by Cole Hapach and Ian Moyers and Kobe Warren’s single. Wesley Sparks took the loss.

Oxford looks to stave off elimination in a 2:30 p.m. against Fairhope American Sunday.
