A major coaching milestone marks a busy night of area high school volleyball:

OXFORD: Fresh off of coaching her team to its second consecutive Calhoun County title Monday, Oxford coach Wendy McKibbin got a surprise recognition Tuesday.

Oxford athletics director Larry Davidson recognized the 29-year coach’s 900th career victory in volleyball. McKibbin reached the milestone earlier this season, but Tuesday’s action marked the Yellow Jackets’ first home match since then.

McKibbin, who also coached at Saks, has coached the past 24 years at Oxford. She’s the school’s long-time head coach in volleyball and softball and coaches bowling.

“We appreciate the dedication and loyalty that Wendy has given our total athletic program,” Davidson said. “More importantly is the commitment she has made in the young people she has coached.”

McKibbin has coached softball for 30 years, volleyball 29 and bowling five. She said her goal is to reach 35 years.

“I enjoy it,” she said. “Until I don’t enjoy it, I’ll keep doing it.”

As for the coaching milestone, she reached it 10 victories ago, including three in the Calhoun County Tournament. She stands at 910 in volleyball.

She credited players, assistant coaches and administration.

“It means a lot,” she said. “More than anything, it’s the relationships with the kids. …

“It’s just a unique progression. It’s trying and frustrating but so rewarding, when you see the lightbulb come on, and it just clicks. The biggest thing is to get kids to have confidence in themselves. Then you get to see them go from being a 14-year-old kid and become a doctor.”
