Hughley ‘doing great’ after Jacksonville caps emotional week with victory. Westbrook Christian stops conversion to win clash with Oneonta. Wellborn’s Traylor passes 1,000 rushing yards. Weaver gets first victory under Brooks. PV, WP, Ranburne and JCA victorious.

JACKSONVILLE — Jacksonville emotional week continued on the field Friday.
Kelvin Hughley was carted off of the field after rushing for a 47-yard touchdown and catching a touchdown pass in the Golden Eagles’ 24-13 victory over Cherokee County on Friday.
According to a post tagged to Hughley’s Facebook page early Saturday morning, Hughley was “doing great!”
“Kelvin is doing great!! He’s moving, talking and walking. Thank you all for your prayers. God is so good!!” the post said.
Jacksonville principal Jonathan Skinner confirmed that Hughley’s condition improved.
“He wasn’t able to feel his legs at the field,” Skinner said via text. “He’s doing much better now, though, and is up, walking around at the hospital. Such a blessing.”
The scary injury and victory came a day after the Alabama High School Athletic Association put Jacksonville on restrictive probation, making the Golden Eagles ineligible for this year’s playoffs. The AHSAA also levied one-year suspensions for Jacksonville head coach Jeremy Sullivan and assistant coach Phileepae Holloway, citing violations of a rule covering improper contact of athletes “to inquire or encourage them to transfer or enroll in their school for the chief purpose in participating in interscholastic athletics.”
The AHSAA ruled affected athletes ineligible to play for Jacksonville and said the school must forfeit any games in which they played.
Jacksonville officials released a statement announcing they will appeal the AHSAA sanctions.
Jacksonville associate head coach Alphonso Freeney served as interim head coach Friday and praised the team’s resilience.
”The things that are going on right now (are) unfair to them,” the former Saks head coach said, “but the way they continue to pull together and lean on each other is a testament to the culture that Coach Sullivan, coaching staff, administration, and the community has built here in Jacksonville.
“I’m proud to be an Eagle and I’m thankful for the people that have had our backs through it all.”
Jaden Jones added a touchdown run Friday. Quarterback Javin Scott, eighth-grade backup for starter Cross Land, threw a touchdown pass.
WESTBROOK CHRISTIAN 28, ONEONTA 27: Jerry Zeringue, Jaxon Clough and easton Skaggs led the pile as Private Class A No. 2 Westbrook Christian stopped a two-point conversion with 46 seconds left to save a victory over Class 3A No. 4 Oneonta (5-1).
Westbrook Christian’s Brody Blevins rushed for 227 yards and four touchdowns, covering 82, 63, 10 and two yards.
Sam Legg rushed for 78 yards.
Jonathan Hersman led the Westbrook defense with 17 tackles, and Titus Jones added 15. Clough and Skaggs had 12 apiece, and Brooks Whiteside finished with 11.
Clough and Hersman had a sack apiece.
Read Barber hit all four extra points, and four of his six kickoffs went for touchbacks.
WELLBORN 52, NORTH SAND MOUNTAIN 6: Running back Mareese Traylor crossed the thousand-yard rushing mark for the season, and Class 2A No. 9 Wellborn improved to 6-0 for the first time since 2020.
The Panthers are averaging 51.2 points a game, well ahead of the 2019 team’s school-record pace of 40.1 a game. The 2019 team, which reached the Class 3A semifinals, scored 561 points in 14 games.
Traylor carried eight times for 73 yards and three touchdowns Friday. He has 1,037 yards and 13 touchdowns on 57 carries (18.2 yards a carry).
Lincoln Schmitz added 58 yards and a touchdown on four runs, and Kaden Horton ran five times for 77 yards and a touchdown.
Wellborn finished with 322 total yards, 291 rushing, and held North Sand Mountain (2-4) to 87 total yards (15 rushing).
PLEASANT VALLEY 27, SPRING GARDEN 0: Braxton Salster rushed for 13 160 yards and two touchdowns and passed for 89 yards and two touchdowns, and Class 2A No. 10 Pleasant Valley upped to 5-1.
Salster’s touchdown runs covered one and 48 yards. He threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to running back Kayden Vick and a 50-yard touchdown pass to Cooper Dougal.
Zeb Curvin led the Raiders’ defense with 11 tackles, including one tackle for loss. Jackson Acker added 10 tackles, one for loss, and a forced fumble. Walker Roper had three tackles for loss among his 10 tackles.
WHITE PLAINS 42, HOKES BLUFF 28: Crew Martin rushed for 89 yards and two touchdowns and passed for 82 yards, and White Plains (2-3) won two games in a row for the first time since 2024.
Martin’s touchdown runs covered one and three yards.
Jayden Murray rushed for 75 yards with a one-yard touchdown run, and Antonio Woods rushed for 55 yards with touchdown runs of 30 and three yards.
Walker Edwards completed four of seven passes for 47 yards and a 14-yard touchdown pass to Bryson Cheatwood.
Hokes Bluff’s Brenton Hale rushed for touchdowns of 47, six and 18 yards on the way to 261 yards on 30 carries.
Dean Morgan completed eight of 15 passes for 77 yards, including a 19-yard touchdown pass to Jace Hanks.
OHATCHEE 43, GLENCOE 28: Quarterback Sawyer Beegle rushed for 109 yards and three touchdowns and completed all four of his passes for 95 yards as Ohatchee improved to 4-2, the Indians’ best start since 2023.
Phoenix Tuioloega rushed for 74 yards and a touchdown, Jayden Siegler 49 yards and a touchdown and Gus Hunter 48 yards and a touchdown.
Kaleb Brunner caught two passes for 74 yards.
Glencoe fell to 3-2.
WEAVER 35, SAKS 18: Weaver rallied from an 18-7 deficit to score its first victory of the season and first under first-year head coach Logan Brooks.
“Great team win, man,” Brooks said. “It feels great to be a Bearcat. Going to enjoy this one and get back to work on Sunday for White Plains.”

RANBURNE 12, WOODLAND 7: Jack Yearwood rushed 20 times for 97 yards and a touchdown, and Ranburne improved to 4-1.
Andrew Runels rushed 14 times for 81 yards, and Aiden Whitman carried 18 times for 64 yards and a touchdown.
Ranburne finished with 276 yards.
Cason Jones rushed for 35 yards and completed three of six passes for 19 yards.
JACKSONVILLE CHRISTIAN 34, RUSSELL CHRISTIAN 20: Brodie Wilkerson accounted for 291 yards in total offense, and JCA (4-1) avenged its loss in last year’s CFA championship game while earning the right to play host to its playoff opener,
Wilkerson rushed for 171 yards a touchdown and passed for 120 yards. He returned an interception for a score and had eight tackles.
Dawson Wilkerson rushed for 118 yards and three touchdowns and added six tackles.
Jameson Holderread had six tackles, Cade Cates and T.J. Scott added five apiece.
