ANNISTON — Alexandria volleyball coach Whitney Welch often has to speak for her team as the top seed in the Calhoun County Tournament, and her pet saying rarely changes.

It just has a little extra juice to it this year.

County coaches voted the Valley Cubs (27-14 overall, 7-1 county) as the top seed for this year’s tournament, set for Oct. 3 and 5 at Wellborn and Pete Mathews Coliseum. The seeding meeting took place Wednesday at Donoho.

Alexandria will have a first-round bye.

Defending champion Oxford (24-7, 6-1) will hold the No. 2 seed.

Alexandria and Oxford have split two matches this season, but Welch hopes her team will remember last year’s county final most, and what it says about seeds. Al

“A seed is just a seed,” she said. “We were the top seed last year, I think, and we didn’t make it happen. Hopefully, these girls are hungry to get it back.

“Maybe that’s something that can drive us these next few weeks.”

Both teams are retooling after key graduation losses from last year. Oxford’s departed seniors include setter and county player of the year Payton Brooks. Alexandria’s graduation losses  include setter Sophie Martin, middle blocker Kylie Jeffers and outside hitter Charlee Parris.

Oxford has arguably the county’s top hitter in Ava Thomas, who was MVP of last year’s county tournament. Opposing her will be arguably the county’s top libero, Alexandria’s Landry Patterson.
