Anniston ups to 7-0, and 4-5 Hope Christian continues growth against tough competition in first season.

ANNISTON — Flag football’s growth in Calhoun County was on display Monday at Anniston.

The Bulldogs continued their best season yet, beating Hope Christian, the county’s first-year team, 33-0 at Lott-Mosby Stadium.

Anniston improved to 7-0.

“I’m feeling like the season is going well for the Lady Dawgs,” Anniston coach Jessica Young said. “The young ladies are gelling well as a team, coachable, learning the game and trusting what they are learning.

“We have played some very good competition and have many competitive teams ahead of us. So, we are just preparing for each game, one game at a time.”

Anniston’s game statistics:

— Akiyla Burnett: six pulls, three for sacks.
— Arianna Storey: four touchdowns (one rushing), two interceptions. 7-for-14 passing.
— Lauren Brewster: 45-yard touchdown run, two pulls.
— Diamond Lunsford: four pulls.
— Tytianna Brock: 20-yard touchdown run, 3-for-8 passing.
— Kamryn Harris: two interceptions, five pulls, 18 yards rushing.

Hope Christian is 4-5 under Coach Brandon Slick, who called the Saints’ first season “pretty good, honestly,” for a team with one senior and no juniors.

“The girls are really pouring a lot into it and trusting the process of being a first-year team,” he said. “We have played a pretty tough first half of the season, but it has been by design to help prep us for the region play and playoffs on the back end.

“In the first nine games, we’ve played three of those against the No. 3 team (Boaz), No. 10 team (Springville) and now No. 7 team in Anniston, and as a first year 1A private school, playing these bigger 4A-5A programs that have been around for four or five years, and really holding our own for the most part against them is a positive thing for the rest of this year and for the future of our program.”

Hope Christian’s game statistics:

— Kiyra Butler: 48 yards rushing, 21 receiving yards, nine pulls.
— A.J. Montgomery: one interception.
— Kylie Satcher: one interception, 5-for-12 passing for 44 yards.
