On turf time

Weaver’s home opener against Ohatchee moved to Ohatchee as weather slows construction on Bearcats’ turf field. Fields at Saks, White Plains also unfinished.

Weaver’s scheduled home football game with Ohatchee on Aug. 28 will play out at Ohatchee because Weaver’s new turf field won’t be finished in time, first-year Weaver coach Logan Brooks confirms.
The two schools will flip 2026 and 2027 schedules, such that Ohatchee will have six home games this year, and Weaver will have six next year.
The Calhoun County system is rounding out a project to replace grass fields with turf fields on its seven high school campuses. Fields at Alexandria, Ohatchee, Pleasant Valley and Wellborn have been completed.
Fields at Saks, Weaver and White Plains remain works in progress, and recent rain and thunderstorms caused construction pauses.
“Need some dry weather,” Brooks said. Construction has “been at a standstill.”
White Plains’ field appears on schedule to be completed by the Wildcats’ Sept. 4 home opener against Cleburne County, with turf to be delivered Monday.
“They are still saying yes,” White Plains coach Clint Smith said.
Saks’ field remains “dirt and mud,” Wildcats’ coach Michael Easley said..
Saks’ scheduled Sept. 4 home opener against Wellborn has been moved to Wellborn. The next scheduled home game is Sept. 18, against West End-Walnut Grove, and Easley said it’s uncertain if the field will be completed by then.
“I really don’t know,” he said. “I haven’t been told a timetable. I just pretty much show up and stand at the fence every morning and see how much work has been done.”
