OXFORD — Oxford pushed Class 6A No. 1 Saraland to 12 innings in their state tournament opener Monday, but the Yellow Jackets fell into the elimination bracket 5- in a costly game.

Shortstop Kylee Stephens left the game with apparent heat exhaustion in the 12th inning and is doubtful for Oxford’s elimination game with top-ranked Hartelle.

Also, Oxford’s Jayla Jackson pitched all 12 innings against Sarland, spreading out 14 hits with no walks and three strikeouts. Three of Saraland’s runs were earned.

Jackson amassed 142 pitches.

Saraland took the lead with back-to-back RBI singles from J Byrd and A Cole in the top of the 12th.

Oxford tied the game 3-3 on RBI singles from Stephens and Emma Tims-Becerra in the bottom of the sixth.

Jackson went 2-for-5 with a triple and two runs, and Tims-Becerra finished 2-for-4 with a double, a run and an RBI.

Class 4A

MUNFORD; The Lions fell to West Morgan 1- and will play Geneva in the elimination bracket Addyson Britt had a double and two RBIs, and Kastin Lathem had a single and an RBI. Chloe Pickette had two doubles and a run.
