OXFORD — A tearful Chelsea Mize made her way through the gauntlet of hugs after Jacksonville’s boys’ soccer team completed a Golden Eagle sweep of Calhoun County championships Thursday, and two familiar arms wrapped around her from behind.

She let out a joyful laugh as husband Corey Mize, a coaching colleague whose girls’ basketball team won a county title in January, picked her jubilantly.

She entered Thursday a no-time county champion in her eighth season, including this her first coaching Jacksonville’s boys and girls. She left Choccolocco Park as a two-time county champion.

“This is one of the best moments of my life,” Mize said.

Goalie Jackson Patterson made a save to help Jacksonville prevail in a penalty-kick shootout, and the second-seeded Golden Eagles edged top seed Oxford 2-1.

Jacksonville’s boys turned their first crack at the county finals into their first-ever county title. They did it about two hours after Jacksonville’s girls beat Donoho 4-2 to become the first girls’ team other than Donoho to win the 9-year-old Calhoun County Tournament.

Mize, who coached seven seasons at Weaver before a coaching hiatus then resuming this season at Jacksonville, took in the moment.
