Fort Payne girls 58, Oxford 35

JACKSONVILLE —  Naomi Wise led the way with 20 points and seven rebounds, and Fort Payne overcame a slow start to beat Oxford 58-35 in Friday’s Northeast Regional Class 6A semifinals in Pete Mathews Coliseum.

Fort Payne (26-4) advanced to Wednesday’s 9 a.m. championship game against Mountain Brook. 

Fort Payne also got 14 points and seven rebounds from Zimri Craig.

Takayvia Boyd led Oxford with 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Bri Wilson scored eight points.

Oxford finished 18-11, returning to regional after missing last season. The Yellow Jackets overcame major graduation losses, and reigning Class 4A-6A All-Calhoun County player of the year Ava Thomas did not play this season, resting after suffering a stress fracture in volleyball, her college sport.

The Yellow Jackets also overcame nine injuries through the season, including injuries that affected five different players in recent weeks

Moody girls 54, Jacksonville 51

JACKSONVILLE — Neveah Nicholson’s 3-point attempt with 0;8 seconds left hit rim, and Jacksonville fell 54-51 to Springville in Friday’s Northeast Regional Class 5A semifinals in Pete Mathews Coliseum.

Springville (24-8) advanced to face St. Clair County rival Moody in Wednesday’s 4 p.m. regional championship game. The winner advances to the state semifinals.

Jacksonville finished 27-6 with Calhoun County, area and subregional titles.

Georgia Chancellor led Springville with 17 points, including a clutch 3-pointer from the left corner to reclaim a 52-51 lead for the Tigers with a minute to play. She also hit two free throws to provide the final margin.

Gabbi Allison finished with 12 points, Ava Vaughn 10 points with 13 rebounds and Olivia Carroll 10 points. Springville beat Jacksonville for the third time in three tries this season.

Jayci Taylor led Jacksonville with 19 points and 11 rebounds despite missing a period between 3:35 and 2:25 of the fourth quarter after twisting her ankle. She came back off the bench and sank a 3-pointer to give Jacksonville a 48-45 lead.

Nicholson scored 17 points and missed a rushed open look at a 3-pointer in the game’s final sequence. The Golden Eagles inbounded with 7.8 seconds left but had to inbound twice more, after two Springville defections.

Jacksonville’s final play saw the Golden Eagles inbound with 0.8 seconds left. Nicholson caught the ball and shot immediately. The shot was on line but hit the rim.
