ALBERTVILLE — Alexandria emerged from a tough day for Calhoun County teams at the East Regional softball tournament, but nobody emerged without damage
The fourth-ranked Valley Cubs (36-9-3) lost their Class 4A regional opener to Plainview 7-4 at Sand Mountain Park then rebounded for a 13–0 victory over Westminster Christian. Alexandria must win three games Wednesday to advance to next week’s state tournament at Choccolocco Park.
“I don’t know what happened the first game,” Alexandria coach Brian Hess said. “We had uncharacteristic errors. We had some folks that got bug-eyed because it’s regional, and it could be their last time playing, things of that nature.
“Some seniors, it don’t phase. Other seniors, it does. For whatever reason, we come out tight this morning and didn’t play like we’re capable of playing. After that, we come over here and took care of business like we’re supposed to.”
Faith Odom’s three-run home run highlighted a five-run fifth inning for Plainview, and Alexandria fell into the elimination bracket. Alexandria’s Allyssa Hunt went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run, and Brenlee Sparks had a double and an RBI.
Against Westminster Christian, Pressley Slaton went 2-for-3 with a home run, a double, six RBIs and two runs. Sparks went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and Hunt went 2-for-3 with two doubles, four runs and an RBI.
Alexandria opens Wednesday’s play at 10:45 a.m. against an opponent to be determined.
Meanwhile, Class 2A top-ranked Pleasant Valley, Class 3A No. 7 Ohatchee, White Plains and Weaver saw their seasons end Tuesday. Here”s a breakdown:
Class 4A
WHITE PLAINS: The Wildcats opened with a 1-0 loss to Madison County then lost 4-3 to Etowah.
Kylie Moore’s RBI single provided the lone run for Madison County, and White Plains fell into the elimination bracket. Marion Gamble and Savannah McGilton combined to pitch a no-hitter. White Plains’ Leighton Arnold pitched a complete game, spreading out seven hits with seven strikeouts.
White Plains tied its game against Etowah with Kylee Provencio’s sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh inning, but C Wadley’s grounder in the bottom of the seventh scored the walk-off run.
Provencio went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs, and Jaylie Holt went 2-for-3 with a triple and two runs.
The Wildcats finished 22-18 in their first season under head coach and White Plains grad Anna Burgess, their fourth coach in four years.
“I was proud of two things,” Burgess said. “:They bought into my mentality and my standard with several coaching changes in the past few years. They didn’t have to buy in, but they did, and I appreciate that. That means more to me than they know.
“They have grown in so many ways that are not necessarily seen on the field.”

Class 3A
RANDOLPH COUNTY: It was a night for Randolph County to make program history, and for head coach Robyn Thompson to get a cooler dousing.
Khloe Yates’ ground ball scored Aniyah Lee with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, and the Tigers beat Fyffe 6-5 in the Class 3A elimination-bracket final to clinch the program’s first-ever berth in the state tournament.
The Tigers will play next week at Choccolocco Park against an opponent to be determined.
“We”ve been to regionals 15, 16 years, maybe more than that, as long as I can remember,” Thompson said. “This is the first time ever we’ve made it to the state tournament.
“From the first of the season, everybody counted us out. They really did because I’m starting two seventh graders. I’ve got another seventh grader in the dugout. I’ve got a young squad, but the one thing you can’t count out is heart.”

After opening the tournament with a 21-16 loss to Fyffe then beating Ohatchee 6-2 to reach the second day, Randolph County won three games Tuesday to advance. The Tigers beat Collinsville 10-7 in eight innings, Ohatchee 5-4 and Fyffe 6-5, avenging their lone loss in the tournament.
Gracie Robinson’s two-run double and Hannah Parmer’s RBI double in the top of the eighth inning made the difference against Collinsville. Parmer finished 3-for-5 with a triple, a double, two runs and two RBIs, and Robinson had three RBIs.
Gracie Huckeba went 2-for–3 with a double, an RBI and a run against Ohatchee. Lizzie Milam had a double and an RBI, and Kinsley Weathers went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run.
Weathers went 2-for-4 with a triple, a run and an RBI against Fyffe. Robinson and Lee each had a single and an RBI, and Bryer Thompson went 2-for-3 with two runs.
Milam pitched all 22 innings for Randolph County on Tuesday, allowing 27 hits , five walks and seven earned runs with 10 strikeouts.
“This group right here, they’ve got heart,” Coach Thompson said. ‘They want to play. They’re determined. They have grit. They weren’t going to give up. …
“I always tell them, if you love the game, the game is going to love you back, and that’s what they done.”

OHATCHEE: The Indians opened the day with a 10-4 victory over Weaver in an elimination game then fell to Randolph County 5-4.
The season ended on a controversial play, Makayla Brackett, who represented the tying run on second base with two outs, made contact with Randolph County shortstop Gracie Huckeba, who charged a Lexi Thomas grounder.
Umpires huddled then ruled that Brackett was out on runner interference.
“They said that, no matter what, you can’t run into (the defender),” Ohatchee coach Kendall Poe said. “I stated that the rule book states that, once she has her play on the ball, she ran into our runner.”
Thomas went 2-for-2 with two doubles. Tabi Davidson and Alanah Fitch each went 2-for-4, and Fitch hit a triple.
Jordyn Faulkner went 1-for-2 with an RBI, and Mollee Barnes went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Ohatchee got inside-the-park home runs from Gracie Reed and Fitch against Weaver, and Mackenzie Luna blasted a solo home run. Fitch finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs, and Thomas went 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Reed and Luna each went 2-for-5 with two RBIs.
Brackett got the win, allowing five hits with 11 strikeouts.
The Indians finished 30-12, and Poe picked up her 200th career victory in Ohatchee’s 11-2 rout of Hanceville in Monday’s first-round regional action.
“We’ve never had a 30-win season,” Poe said. “That’s first for me I know at Ohatchee. It was a good season, but we fell short of the goal.”

WEAVER: The Bearcats got to the second day of regional thanks to a 4-3 victory over Glencoe but lost 10-4 to Ohatchee on Tuesday to finish 12-17.
Anna Shirvinski went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI against Ohatchee, and Stevie McGinnis had a double and two RBIs. Caitlin Edmonson went 2-for-4 with a run, and Reyleigh Partner had a double and a run.
“The goal this year was to get to regionals, at the beginning,” Weaver coach Andy Fulmer said. “Then we realized this regional was kind of wide open.
“We just didn’t play well. We played kind of flat, not much energy yesterday early, and then we played really good in the next game. Poe and her staff do a fantastic job, and we just couldn’t get anything going for seven innings.”

Class 2A
PLEASANT VALLEY: The Raiders made it to Tuesday’s winners’ bracket final but lost 9-4 to Pisgah then fell to West-End Walnut Grove 8-1.
Lily Henry went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs against Pisgah, and Alexa Cranmer went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Aubree Cromer went 2-for-4 with a double and a run, and Cailey Almaroad had a single and an RBI.
Haylie Lee’s RBI single got in the third inning got Pleasant Valley on the board first against West End, but the Patriots responded with a two-run third and a four-run fourth.
Henry finished 3-for-4 in her final high school game before moving on to play volleyball and softball at Gadsden State.
Pleasant Valley set a fast-pitch era single-season school record with 40 wins, finishing 40-16. They Raiders were also area champions and Calhoun County runners up.
“I’m proud of this bunch,” Pleasant Valley coach David Bryant said. “Obviously, today was not our day. Sometimes, it don’t end the way you want it to end, but we just had a rough day today.”
