Piedmont’s making-history tour continues with victory over J.B. Pennington, first Northeast Regional berth since 2013. Southside girls back in Jacksonville after breakthrough run in 2023.

PIEDMONT — Piedmont’s girls keep making history.

Three days after becoming back-to-back area champions for the first time in 32 years, Piedmont got a game-high 23 points from Ava Pope and beat visiting J.B. Pennington 56-38 in Friday’s Class 3A subregional game at Piedmont.

The Bulldogs (18-10) will make their first Northeast Regional appearance since 2013 and play Plainview.

Pope hit three 3-pointers Friday and made eight of 11 free throws, and Piedmont got 13 points from Cayla Brothers and seven from Jaycee Glover.

Class 5A

SOUTHSIDE 39, GUNTERSVILLE 32: A year after breaking through to the Northeast Regional final for the first time, Southside is back.

Laylah Davis hit three 3-pointers on the way to 14 points, and the Panthers advanced to face Moody in Thursday’s Class 5A Northeast Regional semifinals in Jacksonville State University’s Pete Mathews Coliseum.

Madison Shaw hit three 3-pointers on the way to 11 points Friday, and Grace Anne Rose added 11. 

Class 4A

NEW HOPE 64, JACKSONVILLE 42: Much-improved Jacksonville ran into a state power in Friday’s Class 4A Northeast subregional action, falling to New Hope.

The Golden Eagles trailed 20-12 at the end of the first quarter, and New Hope broke the game open with a 21-0 second quarter.

Senior Halaina Lozano and Alexis Phillips led Jacksonville with 12 points apiece. Lozano hit four 3-pointers.

Neveah Nicholson added seven points.

Class 3A

SUSAN MOORE 76, WEAVER 39: Aaliyah Marks led Weaver with 12 points, including one 3-pointer, and D.J. Gibbs added seven.
