Alexandria beats Southside, and Wellborn beats Randolph County in area finals. All advance to next week’s regional play.

ALEXANDRIA — Alexandria has aimed at the loaded Class 5A North Regional all season, and the Valley Cubs made sure they’ll go to Huntsville as an area champion.

Alexandria beat Southside 25-17, 28-15, 25-21 in Thursday’s Class 5A, Area 12 final, advancing as an area champion to the North Regional at the Von Braun Center.

The Valley Cubs (48-8) will play Area 10 runner up Hayden on Wednesday at 10:15 a.m. 

Southside also advanced by virtue of its victory over Lincoln in Thursday’s area opener and will play Area 10 winner Jasper on Wednesday at 10:15 a.m.

Top performers for Alexandria on Thursday:

— Kailey Dickerson: 15 kills, eight digs, one block, eight aces.
— Eryn Spradley: seven kills, three digs, one block.
— Kirsten Heathcock: one kill.
— Cassidy Hartsfield: eight kills, one block.
— Kaden Pritchett: four kills, three blocks.
— Devan White: 13 digs.
— Ava Johnson: one kill, five digs.
— Charlee Parris: five digs.
— Christian Hess: one kill, 17 assists, seven digs.
— Sophie Martin: one kill, 14 assists, two digs.
— McKinley Cooper: three kills.

WELLBORN: The Panthers are a 30-win area champion.

Wellborn won the three-team Class 3A, Area 8 on Thursday, beating Randolph County 25-9, 25-13, 25-6 in the final at Wellborn.

The Panthers (30-9) advanced to the South Regional in Montogmery’s Cramton Bowl Multiplex and will play Area 6 runner up Alabama Christian on Wednesday at 9 a.m.

Randolph County also advanced after eliminating Saks in a five-set match Thursday and will play Area 6 winner Prattville Christian on Wednesday at 9 a.m.

Top performers for Wellborn:— MVP Calla Hayes: 11 kills, two digs, two blocks, one ace.
— Anna Odom: eight kills, all-tournament team.
— Diana Rodriguez: five digs, three aces, all-tournament team.
— Gracie Lewis: 30 assists, eight aces, all-tournament team.
— Hannah Grubbs: seven kills, four blocks, two digs, all-tournament team.
— Libby Smith: seven kills.
