HANDLEY — Cannon Kyle’s 40-yard touchdown pass to Amajah Williams gave Handley the lead for good, and E.J. Goss added a touchdown run as the Tigers held off Jacksonville in a Class 4A, Region 4 showdown Friday.
The game between Class 4A’s fifth- and six-ranked teams served as the region opener for both teams and gave Handley a leg up in the region race. The Tigers are 3-0 overall, 1-0 region. Jacksonville is 2-1, 0-1.
Kyles’ touchdown pass to Williams gave Handley a 26-24 lead with 58.7 seconds left in the third quarter.
Jacksonville took a 24-20 edge on Jim Ogle’s 13-yard touchdown pass to Ky’dric Fisher at 9:25 of the third.
Ogle also hit a 25-yard touchdown pass to Damonte Sinclair to bring Jacksonville within 20-17 at halftime and a 74-yarder to Fisher to rally the Golden Eagles to within 14-10 at 9:07 of the second.
Ogle completed 16 of 31 passes for 257 yards and three touchdowns, and Fisher caught 11 passes for 219 yards. Xza English rushed for 97 yards.
Kyles ran 20 yards for a touchdown and threw a 39-yarder to Montrevious Black as Handley built a 14-3 lead. A Goss touchdown run made it 20-10 at 6:58 of the second quarter.
Kyles accounted for 172 total yards, including 111 rushing yards. Goss rushed for 188 yards and two scores.
OHATCHEE 34, WESTBROOK CHRISTIAN 33: At Ohatchee, the Indians built a 26-6 lead, only to see Westbrook Christian rally to lead 27-26 after recovering an onsides kick.
Ohatchee reclaimed a 34-27 lead when quarterback Jake Roberson connected with Jesse Baswell on fourth down and 14, and Baswell took the direct snap for the two-point conversion.
Will Folsom broke up Westbrook’s two-point conversion pass with 30 seconds left, then Colby Hester recovered Westbrook’s onsides kick.
The game marked former Piedmont coach Steve Smith’s regular-season return to Calhoun County, as Westbrook Christian’s first-year head coach. He coached Piedmont to five state titles over 17 years before retiring from the public school system and going to Westbrook.
“We weren’t able to keep them out of the end zone and gave a up a score with 30 seconds left,” Ohatchee coach Chris Findley said. “I saw Coach Smith hold up two fingers, so we knew this play was going to decide it.
“I took our final time out and tried to regroup our guys. We went man coverage on the play, and Will Folsom was able to come up with a huge pass breakup. It was a huge play. Then we had to get ready for another onsides kick, and Jake Roberson was able to come away with it this time to seal it for us.”
Ohatchee improved to 3-0, 1-0 in Class 3A, Region 6. Westbrook is 2-1, 0-1.
Baswell finished with 17 carries for 160 yards and four touchdowns. He also caught three passes for 61 yards and a touchdown.
Hester accounted for 48 rushing yards, 30 receiving yards and an interception to go with his second recovered onsides kick of the season.
Roberson completed five of 12 passes for 101 yards and a touchdown.
Westbrook quarterback Greyson Carroll went 13-for-25 for 226 yards and three touchdowns. Cooper Greer caught eight passes for 110 yards and a touchdowns, and Lamycal Mitchell scored on both of his receptions, totaling 93 yards.
Hunter Arnold had 10 carries for 110 yards and two scores.
OXFORD 42, SHADES VALLEY 13: Mason Mims hit on 18 of 23 passes for 172 yards and two touchdowns, and Oxford rolled past Shades Valley 42-13 in the Class 6A, Region 6 opener for both teams Friday.
D.K. Wilson rushed six times for 112 yards and touchdown runs of 42 and 51 yards. He also caught a touchdown pass.
Camare Hampton caught seven passes for 82 yards and a touchdown.
Oxford also got 10 tackles plus a sack from Keenan Britt, and Desmond Whitson added six stops.
Oxford improved to 3-0, 1-0 region. The Yellow Jackets’ 3-0 start is their best since the 2019 state championship team won its first seven games.
ANNISTON 47, MUNFORD 14: Anniston rebounded strongly from its loss at Andalusia last week to improve to 2-1 on the season, 1-0 in Class 4A, Region 4. Munford is 0-2, 0-1.
Quarterback Gavin Doss ran for two 1-yard touchdown runs and threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to T.K. Downie.
Jaden Dobbins had a 48-yard touchdown run, and Jayden Heard ran back a punt for a score. William Grayson had a 3-yard touchdown run.
“Great bounce-back win,” first-year Anniston coach Rico Jackson said. “I thought we played a much cleaner game than we did last week.
“Jaden Dobbins had a big game , along with Gavin Doss and T.K. Downie. We established the run, which we worked on all week. Proud of the boys.”
PLEASANT VALLEY 34, WEST END 14: Jaden Sparks and Holt Bentley scored two touchdowns a piece, and Braxton Salster added a touchdown run on the way to 181 rushing yards as Pleasant Valley opened Class 2A, Region 6 play with a victory.
The Raiders bagged their first 2-0 start since 2016.
Sparks carried 15 times for 65 yards, and Bentley scooted 80 yards on seven carries.
Clark Hill had 29 yards on four carries and led the Raiders’ defense with 11 tackles, including two tackles for loss. Bryce Freeman had nine tackles and Samuel Duncan eight.
“So proud of the offense tonight,” Pleasant Valley coach Jonathan Nix said. “We scored every time that we got the ball but twice. Once was a punt and once was victory at the end of the game.
“The guys up front controlled the line of scrimmage. The defense stepped up huge after halftime and held West End to zero points in the second half. This was a team effort.”
CLEBURNE COUNTY 42, TALLADEGA 13: The Tigers improved to 2-0 while opening Class 4A, Region 4 play with a victory.
Quarterback Hunter Gore hit on eight of 12 passes for 104 yards and two touchdowns, and the Tigers passed for 138 yards on the night. Grey Freeman caught three passes for 54 yards and two scores.
Jake Dingler rushed for 122 of Cleburne County’s 275 yards on the ground with two touchdowns, and Austin Mayfield rushed for 40 yards on five carries with a touchdown.
